Callaway LR550 Rangefinder Review
If you’re looking for a compact, easy to handle sporty laser rangefinder that packs a lot of utility for the price, you’ll really appreciate the Callaway LR550 Rangefinder. Designed to provide a quick and accurate distance measurement, the Callaway LR550 is a perfectly pragmatic tool for the golf course. Yes, Callaway does designate this model as one for the ladies, but we find nothing in its design nor utility that should limit it to gender specific use. As the little brother to the Callaway LR1200, the rangefinder comes with 6x magnification instead of the LR1200’s 7x magnification. We didn’t miss the difference on the golf course. Although it only tops out at 550 yards instead of the LR1200’s 1100 – we’ve never hit a ball that far anyway!
Features we liked:
1) The LR550 is Waterproof.
2) First Target Priority Mode – increases accuracy when targeting the pin against a background of trees for example.
3) High eyepoint – makes it easier for those of us who wear glasses.
4) LCD Backlight – benefits readability in low light conditions.
5) One Touch use – what can be easier than that?
One feature we weren’t too keen on:
1) Scan mode is limited to 8 seconds
So how does it hold up to real world use? We were duly impressed. The LR550 rangefinder was incredibly reliable and accurate. My collegues with their GPS units were consistently off by upwards of ten yards. As well, the battery life has been fantastic. While the unit is light, the Callaway LR550 is quite rugged and durable, as well, wipes clean easily for those of us with the tendency to drop our gadgets on the cartpath. Optics are super crisp, and hats off to Nikon for a superb job here.
In summary, if you want a compact lightweight durable rangefinder, and don’t want to spend a small fortune, then you’d do well to outfit yourself with the Callaway LR550 Rangefinder (just don’t tell the fellas it’s built for the ladies…)
